Description
Glencairn Parish Churchyard is a roughly square enclosure bounded by rubble-built walls with ashlar coping. Around 1836, the churchyard was extended to the west, enclosed by iron railings, to accommodate a new church. The listing excludes the graveyard extension to the north and the scheduled monument SM3139.
A notable feature is the Gillespie of Peelton mausoleum, built around 1814, which exhibits a fine classical design. It has a round-arched panel on each face, including the south doorway, with decorative swags. Fluted pilasters mark the angles, and the structure is topped with urn finials and a dome. Other monuments within the churchyard include the tomb of Dr W R Munro, featuring a bronze medallion bust. Two gates are located to the south, each approached by corniced, square gatepiers with pyramidal caps. The original gateway, on the east side, is accessed by a flight of steps between two buildings.
Drawings detailing proposals for reconstructing the old church, by J Wilson Paterson from 1928, are kept within the vestry of the present church. A sketch depicting the old church when it still had a roof is also present. Records related to 18th and 19th century work on the church can be found in SRO CH2/298. The statutory address for the listed building is Graveyard at Glencairn Parish Church, including walls and gatepiers, excluding graveyard extension to north and scheduled monument SM3139, Kirkland Village. Previously, the listing included the Gillespie of Peelton Monument.
