Dumfries Mill, Mill Road, Dumfries

Dumfries Mill, located on Mill Road in Dumfries, was designed by Andrew Meikle around 1781. It is a three-storey grain mill with a rectangular plan, featuring a transversely-set addition from the early 19th century that is one storey higher and spans the full width of the main range. The mill is constructed from coursed red rubble with ashlar dressings, and it has late 19th to early 20th century crow-steps on all gables, topped with slated roofs.

The main range has a six-bay long east wall, built in ashlar at the lower level where the water wheel was previously mounted, with openings above that contain small-paned glazing. The west elevation is irregular and has undergone significant alterations, while the north gable is harled and features a door added in 1986 for visitor access.

The addition has been altered as well, presenting a two-bay south elevation and a platform to the west. The lade has also been modified, but it includes a good sluice gate at the caul and a wide stone-built outflow.
