Description
Achafolla Mill, located on Luing, is a former corn mill dating from the earlier to mid 19th century, with some later additions and alterations. It is a single-storey building with an attic, featuring a rectangular plan that is built into the hillside. The mill retains its wheel, located to the northeast, and has a roofless addition at the rear that forms a near L-plan. The structure is predominantly constructed of whinstone rubble, with some parts harled, and features rubble sandstone quoins in the later wing.
The southeast (front) elevation is built into the hillside, with a square-headed, catslide opening that breaks the eaves and is offset to the left of centre. On the northeast (side) elevation, there is a gable end to the left, which houses an all-iron overshot wheel at ground level, measuring 16 feet in diameter. A small square opening is centered in the gablehead, and there are remains of a rubble wall adjoining the outer right side.
The northwest (rear) elevation is a blind elevation leading to the roofless projection on the outer right. It features a square-headed opening in a bay that is recessed to the left, along with remains of a rubble wall projecting to the outer left. The southwest (side) elevation has a gable end to the right, with an arched entrance formed in a partly blocked, square-headed opening centered at ground level. There is also a small rectangular opening offset to the right above, and a square-headed opening in the roofless addition to the outer left.
The glazing is missing, and the principal block has a corrugated-iron roof, which is partially missing. Inside, the principal block has rubble walls and an open timber ceiling supported by tie beams. The milling machinery remains in place to the northeast, consisting of timber-framed support with two pairs of stones, each 50 inches in diameter, along with various cogs and wheels. There are also remains of metal roof supports in the later addition.
