Cochran Memorial Gymnasium, Kirkcudbright Academy, St Mary's Wynd, Kirkcudbright

Kirkcudbright Academy is a 2-storey asymmetrical school building constructed in 1901 on the site of an earlier structure. It is made of granite with red sandstone dressings. The façade features channelled pilaster strips at angles that divide the ground floor bays, while the upper bays are also divided by pilasters. The entrance elevation has two outer recessed bays on the right, which contain tripartite windows on both the ground and first floors, and the inner two bays have bipartite windows. To the left, there is a tower with a round-arched door that is framed by a pilastered and pedimented doorpiece. Above this door is a round-arched window, and the tower features a clock face flanked by paired outer pilasters that support a frieze, cornice, and segmental block pediment. The tower is topped with a bellcast roof that has a capping lantern. There is also a narrow recessed bay on the left and an extensive rear wing.

The Cochran Memorial Gymnasium, completed in 1926, is made of polished red sandstone and exhibits a classical design with a full-height Corinthian portico. This portico is supported by two central Corinthian columns and outer channelled piers, which hold up a frieze, mutule cornice, and pediment. The ground floor features three doors, while the outer bays have three windows with bracketed pediments. The gymnasium also includes two low recessed wings.
