Description
197 High Street in Dumfries is a building dated 1882, designed in the Free Renaissance style. It stands three storeys tall, featuring two bays facing both High Street and Friars Vennel, with both elevations similarly detailed. The Friars Vennel side has a central wall-head stack. At the ground level, there is a well-designed glazed shop front, with a cornice above that is raised at the curved corner. The building is constructed of red ashlar and includes narrow pilaster strips, with horizontal strings that divide the floors. The first floor has segmental-arched windows, while the second floor features round-arched windows that have scrolled and pedimented heads above the main eaves level. The casement windows each include a timber mullion and transom. The building has a low parapet, corniced stacks, and a concealed roof.
