Description
The Martyrs' Stone is a circa 1685 monument erected within the garden of a farmhouse to commemorate the execution of five individuals. It is a simple upright slab with a shaped top, bearing an inscription on its south face. The inscription reads: "In this yard were shot John Gibson, James Bennoch, Robert Edgar, Robert Mitchell & Robert Grierson, April 28, 1685 by Colerell (sic) Douglass & Livingstouns Dragoons for adhering to Christs Kingly Government (sic) in his Church against Tyrannie perjurie & prelacie." The remains of the executed individuals are located in the adjacent parish churchyard, listed as number 232 in the inventory. The monument is designated for its group value and historic interest.
