Description
The Church of Scotland, also known as Langholm Parish Church, was designed by William Burn and David Bryce and built between 1842 and 1843. This large Gothic church has a rectangular plan with a nave and aisles, and it stands free in a park above the west bank of the river. The exterior is constructed of stugged ashlar with polished dressings, featuring a string course at cill level and low roof parapets. The church has hood-moulded lancets on its firmly-buttressed bays and a gabled porch at the south end of each side. Notable architectural features include large three-light stepped gable windows and a south gable that has a pointed-arched wide doorway with nook-shafts and an apex belfry. The roofs are covered with slate.
