16 Johnston Terrace, Edinburgh

16 Johnston Terrace is a four-storey tenement building with an attic and basement, designed by John Muirhead in 1864. It features Scottish 17th century revival detailing and presents five bays to Johnston Terrace and seven bays to Castle Wynd North. The structure is built from squared and snecked rubble and includes string courses at the first, second, and attic floors, along with crowstepped gables.

On the south elevation facing Johnston Terrace, there is a forestair with cast-iron railings that leads up to the entrance terrace, with a door and windows located beneath the steps. The entrance features a timber panelled door set in a pilastered surround topped with a broken pediment. The façade is regularly fenestrated, with a gabled two-bay section at the centre that is corbelled out at the second and attic floors. The attic includes gabled dormerheads in the two right bays and the outer left bay.

The west elevation facing Castle Wynd North has a gabled two-bay section on the right, with the left bay being blind and a wallhead stack present. A string course at the second floor steps up over a blank panel. The central two-bay block features a two-light gabled dormerhead that breaks the eaves to the attic. The left three-bay block is regularly fenestrated and also has gabled dormerheads in the attic that break the eaves.

The building has four-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, grey slate roofing, and corniced stacks with circular cans.
