Description
1 Ramsay Lane in Edinburgh is a former school building designed by David Rhind in 1850. It is a two-storey structure with an attic and basements at the rear, featuring five bays and Jacobean detailing. The exterior is constructed from lightly stugged coursed ashlar with polished dressings, while the rear is made of squared and snecked rubble with polished dressings. A string course runs between the ground and first floors, and the building has bracketed eaves. The doors and windows have chamfered surrounds.
On the west elevation facing Ramsay Lane, there is a slightly advanced three-bay block at the center with a shaped gable. This section includes a tripartite window flanked by bipartite windows on both the ground and first floors, with hoodmoulds and labelstops above the first-floor windows. A small tripartite window in the gable features a hoodmould that steps up over a date panel inscribed with "1850." To the right, there is a single bay with a hoodmoulded timber panelled door, topped by a carved open book. Above this door is a bipartite window. To the left, a recessed bay has steps leading to a clouted timber boarded door with decorative hinges and a fanlight, which has later diamond-pane glazing. A single window is located to the right of this bay.
The south side elevation features a string course and a shaped gable, with a door to the left set in a moulded surround. The east rear elevation is regularly fenestrated with mullioned and transomed windows, and there is a gable to the left with an apex stack.
A two-leaf cast-iron gate with fleur-de-lys finials is located to the left of the building.
Inside, much of the original school fittings remain, including classrooms with timber panelling, some plain chimneypieces, and stone stairs with cast-iron banisters. The windows have four-pane glazing with top hoppers, and the roof is covered with grey slates. A cast-iron downpipe with a decorative hopper is also present.
