Description
47-49 Main Street in Ratho is a mid-19th century, two-storey, three-bay house that was originally a pair of houses. It features a rectangular plan and is constructed from coursed, squared whinstone with droved sandstone margins and quoins.
The main elevation has an entrance bay at the center. The original pair of doors has been altered, with the left door now blocked and converted into a window, while a further window on the right is also blocked. There are flanking windows in the outer bays. The first-floor windows are regularly arranged, with a blind window at the center.
The windows are plate glass sash and case types. The roof is covered with grey slate and has ashlar coping at the skews, along with coped and rendered apex stacks.
The property is enclosed by a low rubble boundary wall topped with gablet ashlar coping. The upper part of the wall on the right side of the gate features stone inscribed with the alphabet. There is a small wynd to the left that provides access to the rear of the building.
