Description

The Salisbury Hotel, located at 41, 43, and 45 Salisbury Road in Edinburgh, dates from around 1825. This building is a pair of classical houses that are two storeys tall with a raised basement, featuring a symmetrical three-bay design. The exterior is made of cream sandstone ashlar, which has been cleaned to reveal contrasting colours. The basements are lightly stugged, while the sides and rear are constructed from coursed rubble. Architectural details include a base course, architraves around the first and ground floor windows, a cornice, and a blocking course. The first-floor windows in the outer right bays are adorned with decorative cast-iron window guards.

On the south elevation, modern concrete steps lead to doorways in the two central bays, with an additional doorway providing access to the basement of No 45. The doors are panelled, featuring plate glass fanlights, and a small-paned geometric fanlight is present at the basement. The doorpieces are supported by Greek Doric columns and have cornices, with single windows located above. The remaining bays also contain single windows.

The windows throughout the building are made of plate glass and timber, with sash and case designs. The ground floor and basement of No 45 have 12-pane windows, while the basement of No 41 features 16-pane windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a piended design, along with a coped wallhead and mutual stacks with moulded cans.

The interior was not seen in 1995. Surrounding the property are low coursed and coped boundary walls along the street, with coursed, painted gatepiers topped with pyramidal caps. There are replacement railings, a modern garage adjoining the house to the west, and additional replacement railings in the areas.
