Description

Capstan is a cylindrical cast-iron structure, dated 1917, made by Douglas & Grant Ltd of Kirkcaldy. It features concave sides and a slightly domed top, resting on a deep concrete base that houses the working mechanism. This base is covered by a large cast-iron plate. The maker's plate is cast into the top of the capstan, reading "DOUGLAS & GRANT LTD. ENGINEERS. KIRKCALDY. 1917."
