Description

12-20 St Giles Street in Edinburgh is a four-storey and attic, seven-bay Scots Baronial tenement designed by David Bryce and Robert Smith in 1872, with later alterations by John Bryce. The building features coursed ashlar stone, which is painted at the ground level. The ground floor has round and basket-arched openings, while the central two-leaf timber-panelled door is topped by a Heriot's-style pediment flanked by obelisks. The first-floor windows have strapwork pediments, and the penultimate bays on the first and second floors contain stone-mullioned bipartite windows. The fourth floor has pedimented gables for the windows in the two outer bays, and there are twin crowstepped gables with apex stacks that interlock on a semicircular-pedimented dormer. The shops feature plate glass, and the first-floor windows are timber sash and case with 12-pane glazing above.
