Description
Regent Bridge in Edinburgh, designed by Archibald Elliot with Robert Stevenson, was built between 1815 and 1819. This single semicircular-span bridge crosses Calton Road and features classical screens on either side of Waterloo Place. The bridge is constructed from droved ashlar, with polished voussoirs and polished ashlar used for the screens. It includes an impost course, archivolt, band course, and a crowning cornice.
On Waterloo Place, there are a pair of screens that have a base course, entablature, and blocking course. The central semicircular arch is highlighted by a console keystone and archivolt, framed by engaged Corinthian columns. To the right and left of the arch, there is a lower Ionic colonnade, and at the outer right and left, there are advanced sections of wall featuring a central blind niche and a recessed panel above.
The bridge is also adorned with spear-head finialled cast iron railings set on ashlar copes, which run the full length of the elevations along Waterloo Place.
