Description
17, 19, and 21 Leith Street in Edinburgh is a double tenement block built around 1780. It features a nearly symmetrical, four-storey and attic design with an 11-bay facade facing Leith Street. The exterior is made of droved ashlar with polished cills, although some areas on the ground floor are painted polished ashlar, and the rear is constructed from rubble, some of which is coursed. The ground floor has modern timber shopfronts. Notable architectural details include a dividing band between the ground and first floors on the left side, a cill band on the first floor (also on the left), an eaves cornice, and a blocking course. The windows are regularly spaced.
On the northwest elevation facing Leith Street, there is a timber-panelled door with a semicircular fanlight set in a round arched opening at the center, flanked by shopfronts on either side. The roof features pitched-roof dormers at the first, second, fifth, seventh, tenth, and eleventh bays, along with internal dormers at the third and ninth bays.
The southeast elevation at the rear is seven storeys high, with two nepus gables and dormer-headed windows that break the eaves. The fenestration is irregular, with predominantly droved margins and many later alterations and additions.
For glazing, the ground floor has modern plate glass in timber frames, while the upper floors and dormers feature 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. The dormers have timber fascias and grey slate haffits and roofs. The overall roof is a mansard design, covered in grey slate, with stone skews and skewputts. There are stone and brick gablehead stacks with circular cans on the left and right, and a central pair of brick ridge stacks with circular cans, connected by a stone parapet.
