Description

43 Leith Street is a late 18th century wedge-plan tenement located on a sloping corner site in Edinburgh. The building has four storeys, a basement, and an attic, featuring a four-bay elevation facing Leith Street, a single bay bowed elevation at the north corner, and a five-bay elevation towards Calton Road. The exterior is constructed from droved ashlar with polished margins, while coursed square rubble is used on the Calton Road side. The building has a regular arrangement of windows.

On the northwest elevation facing Leith Street, there are three modern timber shopfronts with recessed doorways at the ground floor. The upper floors have a cill course, with two single windows in the inner bays flanked by tripartite windows on the outer sides. The roof features an eaves cornice, a blocking course, and two dormers.

The north corner elevation includes steps leading down to a basement doorway and Calton Road. The upper floors have a central window with an apron and a projecting moulded cill below.

The east elevation facing Calton Road has predominantly regular fenestration, although there are some alterations and insertions at the lower floors, and blind windows on the upper storeys of the outer right bay.

In terms of glazing, the ground floor features plate glass in timber frames, while the upper floors predominantly have 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, with 4-pane glazing in the side sections of the tripartite windows. The dormers have grey slate piend roofs, haffits, and fascias, with two rooflights positioned between the dormers. The pitched roof has a piended section to the north and is covered with graded grey slate. There is a corniced rendered ridge stack with circular cans and a corniced rubble and rendered wallhead stack on the east elevation.
