Description

The Old Post Office, located at 16, 18, and 20 Waterloo Place in Edinburgh, was designed by Archibald Eliot and Joseph Kay between 1815 and 1819. This building is a three-storey structure with attic storeys at the outer three bays and features a symmetrical Classical design with nine bays. Currently, it is being converted into flats as of 2007.

The east and west elevations each have five bays, with the building height reducing to eight storeys on the west side. The exterior is constructed of ashlar stone, featuring a base course, band courses, and a deep cornice. The ground floor has round-arched openings, while the central three bays are recessed and adorned with a fluted Ionic diastyle in antis portico that rises through the first and second storeys. A balustraded parapet crowns the central three bays, which also includes a central wallhead panel. The outer bays are divided by giant Corinthian-style pilasters.

Both the east and west elevations showcase advanced central three bays, again separated by giant Corinthian pilasters. There is a modern extension at the rear (south) of the building.

The upper storeys predominantly feature timber sash and case windows, with designs including 12-pane and 6-over-9 configurations. The roofs of the outer bays are covered with grey slates.

The interior is currently undergoing conversion from office space to residential flats as of 2007.
