Description

The Royal Bank of Scotland, located at Royal Exchange Square in Glasgow, was designed by Archibald Elliot in 1827. This building features a seven-bay temple-fronted facade facing Royal Exchange Square, with four additional bays on the return sides. It is constructed from cream ashlar sandstone and includes a base course and a ground floor cill course. Above the full entablature, there is a main cornice and a coped parapet. The facade is highlighted by a pedimented Greek Ionic portico, which has fluted columns set on a flight of nine shallow steps, and a single row of coffering on the soffit. There are pilasters at the angles and behind the outer columns of the portico. The ground floor features tall architraved windows, with a centrally located doorway that has consoled cornices and additional moulding on the door's cornice. The return elevations have advanced outer bays to the east, which are interrupted on the penultimate bays by triumphal arches of Royal Exchange Square, listed separately. The ground floor windows are present in three remaining bays, with smaller first-floor windows in each bay. The building now has modern metal-framed windows.

The interior has been largely modernised, regrettably so, in the late 1960s by Gratton and McLean. However, it still retains Elliot's coombed ceiling with shell details and gilding above the saloon, which reflects the design from 1827.
