Description
The building at 195-197 Portobello High Street in Edinburgh is a later 19th-century, three-storey, three-bay symmetrical commercial structure designed in the Franco-Flemish style. It features polished ashlar stonework, with a base course and a cornice above the ground floor that is supported by consoles flanking the doorpieces at the outer bays. There is a fascia and a moulded cill course at the first floor, along with an eaves string course.
On the northeast elevation facing Portobello High Street, there are windows on each storey and in each bay. The ground floor has a tripartite window in the center, which has stop-chamfered arrises and a corbelled cill. To the outer right, there is a two-leaf panelled door with an architraved doorpiece featuring a sculpted mask keystone, and a plate glass rectangular fanlight above. The outer left door is now blinded and used for a cash machine. The first-floor windows have lugged and tabbed architraves with square shoulders, while the second-floor windows feature shouldered designs that break the eaves in pedimented dormerheads, each adorned with carved stone finials and trefoil detailing at the center. There is a griffin gargoyle located at the outer left.
The southwest elevation at the rear has not been seen since 1994. The building has plate glass sash and case windows and a grey slate roof. There is a coped ashlar stack on the southeast side and cast-iron rainwater goods.
Inside, the plasterwork remains intact in the banking hall.
