Description
174 Portobello High Street is a terraced row of houses built in the earlier 19th century, with later alterations. The building is two stories high and consists of 13 bays, featuring shop spaces on the ground floor. It is constructed of droved ashlar with polished dressings. There is a cornice above the fascias of the shops at Nos 176-184, and a cill course at the first floor, with a rendered panel between the shopfront cornice and the cill course, along with a cornice and blocking course.
On the southwest elevation facing Portobello High Street, there are modern shopfronts at Nos 174, 176, and 180, while No 182 retains a 19th-century shopfront. Shop entrances are located in the 2nd, 5th, 9th, and 11th bays. The entrance to the first-floor accommodation at No 178, in the 7th bay, features a panelled door with a rectangular plate glass fanlight above. There is also a panelled door with a 4-pane fanlight above in the 13th bay, which provides access to the accommodation at No 184. The first floor has regularly spaced windows in each bay, with the windows in the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 8th, and 12th bays being blinded.
The northeast elevation at the rear was not seen in 1994. The building features original 12-pane timber sash and case windows in the 10th, 11th, and 13th bays, with painted windows in the 6th and 8th blinded bays. There are plate glass timber sash and case windows in the 4th, 5th, 7th, and 9th bays, and a uPVC casement window in the 2nd bay. The roof is covered with grey slate and has rendered and coped mutual stacks at the ridge, maintaining a continuous roofline. The interior was not seen in 1994.
