Description
186-188 Portobello High Street is an early 19th century house with later alterations, featuring two storeys and an attic. The building has three bays and is set back from the line of Nos 174-184, with shop accommodation extending to align with these adjacent properties. The first floor is rendered, and there is a base course.
On the southwest elevation, there are late 19th century shop fronts, including a curved window to the southeast. This elevation features Ionic pilasters that divide the two shops and also appear on the outer left. It has a fascia and cornice, a blocking course, and decorative cast-iron brattishing. The first floor has widely spaced windows behind the shop fronts.
The northeast (rear) elevation is not visible, as it was not seen in 1994. The first floor has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, along with two tripartite piend-roofed timber sash and case dormers. The roof is covered with graded grey slate, and there is a rendered and coped mutual stack to the northwest.
The interior was not seen in 1994.
