5 Bath Street, Portobello, Edinburgh

5 Bath Street in Portobello, Edinburgh, is an early 19th century building that has undergone later additions and alterations, particularly to the rear. It consists of a pair of two-storey, four-bay terraced houses, with a shop front located at the west corner of the ground floor of No 5. The exterior features finely droved ashlar stone, polished ashlar doorpieces and dressings, and a wooden canted window at No 7. The southwest elevation is harled, while the rear is painted and harled, with a harled extension. Notable architectural details include a base course, a cill course at the first floor, a mutulated cornice, and a blocking course, along with a band course at the canted window.

On the northwest (principal) elevation, there are modern panelled doors closely grouped at the center, with rectangular plate glass fanlights above and a moulded architrave doorpiece featuring a cornice. The first floor has windows, including one in the right bay and a full-height canted window in the left bay, which is part of the shop front that has a dentilled cornice and clasping corner pilaster.

The southeast (rear) elevation includes a two-storey extension at the center bays. The windows are plate glass timber sash and case style, with cast-iron window guards still present at No 5. The roof is grey slate, although it has been modernized at No 7. There is a harled gable end stack at No 5 and a rendered mutual stack to the left. The interiors were not seen during the last inspection in 1994.
