44-48 Grindlay Street, Edinburgh

44-48 Grindlay Street is a four-storey, plain classical end of terrace tenement block designed by David MacGibbon between 1863 and 1864, featuring a shop on the ground floor. The building is constructed from cream painted ashlar and includes long and short quoins. There is a cill course at the third floor and an eaves cornice. The windows on the first and second floors have lugged and bracketed surrounds. The facade facing Lothian Road has three bays, with bipartite windows in the outer bays, while the Grindlay Street side has five bays that are regularly fenestrated. Notably, there is a slightly advanced chimney-breast with long and short quoins in the penultimate bay to the right. The windows are made of plate glass in timber sash and case style on Lothian Road, and feature four-pane glazing on Grindlay Street. The building also has scrolled stacks at the wallheads and corniced (rendered) stacks with circular cans.
