Description

This building at 2 Woodhall Road in Edinburgh was constructed in 1815, with later alterations around 1880, and further modifications by WJ Walker Todd in 1910. It is a former school, featuring a square plan and a pavilion roof, situated on a steeply sloping site. The structure is made of coursed sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings, and includes bandcourses between the first and ground floors, as well as between the ground floor and basement. The corners are accentuated with droved long and short quoins.

The building has segmental-arched windows on the northeast, northwest, and southeast sides, with the northeast and northwest windows featuring moulded architraves. A crenellated centerpiece with quatrefoils is present, along with a two-leaf timber panelled door topped by a small-pane fanlight in a round-arched recessed opening facing Woodhall Road; the outer crenellations serve as chimney stacks. There is a later gabled porch on the northeast side, which has bargeboards, bracketed eaves, and a two-leaf timber panelled door on the northwest return, with a tall, shouldered wall-head stack above. The southwest side displays regular fenestration.

The windows predominantly consist of 2-pane timber sash and case styles on the northeast and northwest sides, while the southeast features plate glass, and some original lying-pane glazing is found on the southwest. The building has corniced stacks and clay cans, topped with a graded grey slate roof.

Access to the building includes public steps from Woodhall Road to Bridge Street, accompanied by plain cast-iron railings. A coped random rubble retaining wall is located along Bridge Street.
