Description
The building at 11 Woodhall Road, Edinburgh, is a pair of semi-detached Arts and Crafts villas designed by Sir Robert Rowand Anderson, dating to circa 1875, with later additions. The houses are two storeys and have an attic, presenting a gable-fronted appearance. Deep eaves overhang the gables, featuring decorative kingposted bargeboards and balconies – those at number 11 are unfortunately missing. Decorative bargeboards also adorn the dormer windows. The exterior is constructed of squared snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings, while the gable apexes are painted brick with applied decorative timbering. Relieving arches frame the ground-floor openings, and all openings have chamfered corners. Small windows are positioned at the gable apexes.
The south-west and north-east elevations (the entrance fronts) are three bays wide, with large, advanced shouldered stacks that break through the eaves on the north side. Timber-panelled doors, set in roll-moulded openings, are flanked by windows on the south side. Flat-roofed dormers and single windows sit above. Two more windows are stepped downwards to the south, with the outer bay at ground floor level having a window; a gabled dormer breaks the eaves above.
The north-west elevation (the front) has single windows at both floors in the end bays. Number 11 features a tripartite mullioned window in the inner bay, with a bipartite mullioned window above. Number 13 has a 2-storey canted window in its inner bay (the second storey being slightly later), and a string course runs between the storeys.
The south-east elevation (the garden side) is two bays wide. Timber-boarded back doors with small-pane glazed fanlights are located in the outer bays. A tiny window sits above these. A single window flanks the right side at ground floor of number 13, with a corbelled canted bay above at the first floor. There’s a single-storey, flat-roofed extension to the inner bay of number 11. A large tripartite box window is set into the first floor above.
Most windows are timber sash and case; number 13 has plate glass and 2-pane glazing, while number 11 has small-pane glazing in the upper sashes above 2- and 4-pane glazing. Some non-traditional glazing is present in both houses. Corniced, shouldered stacks are topped with clay cans. The houses have steep parallel gabled roofs, bracketed eaves, and a linking roof between them, covered with graded grey slate and decorative red ridge tiles.
Inside, the lobbies have half-glazed timber-panelled inner doors leading to tiled floors. Stone staircases are present; number 11 has a turned timber newel post, cast-iron balusters, and a timber hand rail, while number 13 has decorative wrought-iron balusters, a newel post, and a mahogany hand rail. Original picture hooks remain in several rooms within number 11, and timber-panelled doors are found in all rooms of both houses.
A coped rubble boundary wall runs along Woodhall Road.
