Description

7 Barnshot Road in Colinton, Edinburgh, is a semi-detached pair of Arts and Crafts cottages designed by Sir Robert Rowand Anderson in 1884. The building is single-storey with an attic and features a cross-plan layout with four bays. The front elevation has a central advanced two-bay M-shaped gable, which includes tripartite transomed and mullioned windows on the ground floor and bipartite windows above. The gables are adorned with applied half-timbering, and the outer bays are single-storey sections.

The exterior is constructed from squared snecked cream sandstone with ashlar dressings, while the first floor of the front gables is rendered with a dividing string course. The outer bays on the southwest elevation have pointed arch timber panelled doors set in stop-chamfered pointed arch surrounds, with square leaded lights above, although No 7 has plate glass replacements. The outer flanks have tripartite mullioned windows, and No 7 features a later piended-roof bipartite dormer above. The side elevations (northwest and southeast) have paired windows in the half-timbered sections of the gables, with a flush chimney breast that breaks through the timbering at the centre and rises through the eaves.

The northeast (rear) elevation has an advanced two-bay piend-roofed section, with tripartite windows set in mock-timbering at the attic level, and a lean-to roof on the ground floor. The back doors are timber boarded with small windows on the outer flank. The fenestration is irregular across the rest of the elevation.

The windows predominantly consist of timber casements with 6-pane glazing above plate glass on the ground floor, while the attic storey has non-traditional glazing. The roof is red tiled with deep eaves and plain bargeboards on the gables, and there are corniced stacks with tall clay cans.

The property is enclosed by an ashlar coped snecked sandstone boundary wall, which features a decorative wrought-iron gate leading to No 5.
