Description

4 Barnshot Road is a detached house in Colinton, Edinburgh, designed by Sir Robert Rowand Anderson in 1896. This single-storey and attic building features a T-plan layout and includes a piend-roofed scullery annex and a later garage to the south. The house has prominent forward-facing gables on the east and west sides, with piend-roofed tripartite box bays at the ground level that have arched central lights. The dormers break the eaves, with flat-roofed dormers on the east (front) and pedimented gables on the other elevations. The exterior is rendered, accented with ashlar quoin strips and ashlar dressings around some windows, and it has a basecourse.

The north elevation features a two-leaf timber panelled door set in a chamfered architraved ashlar surround, with a half-glazed inner storm door. To the left of the door is a flanking window with a dormer above, and an advanced gable end is positioned to the right. The east elevation is regularly fenestrated, while the west elevation has irregular fenestration, including a piended stair outshot at the angle and a modern conservatory at ground level. The south side has a blind asymmetric gable.

The windows throughout the house are timber sash and case, featuring small-pane glazing, and the bays have casements. The roof is red-tiled with deep bracketed eaves and plain barge boards on the gables. Sandstone stacks with cornices and rendered panels rise tall, topped with clay cans.

Inside, there is a half-glazed timber panelled inner door. The hall features timber panelling with paired pilastered arches leading to the timber staircase. The drawing room includes an Adam-style chimneypiece, an ornate cornice, and a swag-frieze above the picture rail. The dining room also has an Adam-style chimneypiece with original delft-tile insets, an egg and dart and dentil cornice, and hardboard timber-grained panelling. Throughout the house, original timber panelled doors are present.

The property is enclosed by a coped rubble boundary wall, which includes a decorative wrought-iron gate.
