Description

This building at 3 Barnshot Road in Colinton, Edinburgh, is a semi-detached pair of Arts and Crafts cottages designed by Sir Robert Rowand Anderson in 1884. The cottages are single-storey with an attic and have a rectangular plan, featuring four symmetrical gabled bays on the front (southwest) elevation and single half-timbered gables on the sides. At the rear, there are dormers in the attic.

The exterior is constructed of squared and snecked cream sandstone with ashlar dressings, while the first floor at the front is rendered. A string course is present only on the front. The outer bays on the southwest elevation have 4-light slate-roofed canted windows at ground level, while the inner bays feature tripartite mullioned and transomed windows. The first floor has bipartite windows.

The entrance elevations on the northwest and southeast sides include a timber-panelled door set in a shoulder-arched, roll-moulded surround, topped with a leaded fanlight. Above the lintel, there is a roll-moulded pointed-arch hoodmould with foliate ball stops. To the left of the entrance, there is a small window, and above it are two bipartite transomed windows. The southwest gables have advanced single-shouldered stacks.

At the northeast elevation (rear), large gabled timbered dormers break the eaves of the centre bays, with smaller dormers flanking them. The ground floor has irregular fenestration. The scullery annex at the rear has timber boarded doors.

The roof is red tiled with deep eaves and plain barge boards on the gables, including those of the dormers. The chimney stacks are plain corniced with tall red clay cans.

The property is enclosed by an ashlar coped snecked sandstone boundary wall, which features decorative wrought-iron gates.
