41-47 Lothian Street, Edinburgh

41-47 Lothian Street is a classical corner tenement building dating from around 1820. It stands four storeys high and features arcaded commercial premises on the ground floor. The facade has eight bays facing Lothian Street, arranged in two groups of four, and six bays facing Brighton Street, arranged in two groups of three. The corner block is slightly advanced from the rest of the structure. The building is constructed of droved ashlar, which is painted at the ground, first, and second floors. It has a banded string course at the ground, first, and second floors, a cill course at the first floor, and a corniced eaves course. The ground floor is characterized by round arched windows.

On the south elevation facing Lothian Street, the eight-bay facade features a twelve-bay arcaded ground floor divided into two symmetrical blocks, with the corner block slightly advanced. The central entrance consists of timber panelled doors with round-arched blind fanlights for Nos. 43 and 45, flanked by five windows of commercial premises at Nos. 41 and 47, which have glazed doors.

The north elevation facing Brighton Street has six bays, with three bays on the left that are slightly advanced and windowless. The arcaded ground floor includes two closely set windows on the far left and four closely set windows on the far right. There are blind windows at the third floor in the two outer left bays.

The building features plate glass in timber sash and case windows on the first and second floors, with 12-pane glazing at the third floor. The ground floor windows are part of an arcaded design with a late 20th-century glazing scheme. The roof is piended with a double pitch, covered in grey slates, and has straight skews. It is topped with corniced ridge stacks and a shouldered wide wallhead stack with rendered finish, featuring cylindrical clay cans.
