Description
124 Canongate in Edinburgh is a residential and commercial building dated 1685, although it was rebuilt in the 20th century. This four-storey, four-bay structure is distinguished by its widely spaced regular windows. The exterior features red-painted harl from 1970, with chamfered ashlar dressings and a moulded eaves course. A pedimented date panel is located between the ground and first floors, and there is a doorway in the second bay. The right side of the building has a return with small openings on each floor and a small section of exposed corbelling at the third floor.
The windows are predominantly 15-pane timber sash and case, with fixed-pane plate glass at the ground level. There is a broad end stack to the west, made of clay cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods.
The interior has been extensively refurbished for use as offices, with some details visible as of 2007.
