Description
Fisher's Close, located at 312, 314, 316, 318, and 320 Lawnmarket in Edinburgh, is a significant 5-storey and attic tenement dating from around 1700, with major alterations made by James Shearer between 1950 and 1953. The building features 8 bays, arranged in a 1-3-3-1 grouping, and includes three curvilinear-gabled, 2-window wallhead dormers in the attic. To the left, there is a flat-arched pend leading into Fisher's Close. The structure is primarily constructed of ashlar stone, with rubble at the rear. The ground floor has been modernized with ashlar, and there is a sloping string course between the ground and first floors.
Notable architectural details include a roll-moulded surround to the door in the third bay from the left, topped by a broken pediment that encloses a thistle, arms, and the motto "RAX ME THAT BUIK." There is also a decorative carved sign for Fisher's Close to the left. An engaged octagonal stair tower made of rubble, with ashlar dressings and long and short quoins, is located to the right. This tower features a studded timber boarded door in a roll-moulded surround, leading into a stone-flagged pend that provides access to a 6-storey rear wing.
The windows are timber sash and case with 12-pane glazing, and there is a tall brick chimney stack on the right side, with ashlar stone on the left.
