Description

The Secession Church, located at 3 Victoria Terrace in Edinburgh, was designed by Paterson and Sheills in 1865. This three-bay Italian Gothic building was originally a church and is now used as offices. It features a single bay that contains a stair leading to a roll-moulded depressed-arched pend on the right side, which opens to Fishers Close. The exterior is constructed of squared and snecked lightly stugged sandstone, with rubble stonework visible on the side facing Fisher's Close.

On the south elevation facing Victoria Terrace, there is a moulded cornice at the ground floor and a moulded eaves course. The gable is topped with crocketted skews and a finial, and a chequer-set corbelled platform on the right once supported a spired bell turret with an iron finial. The stair bay on the outer right has a pierced parapet. The windows are framed with roll-moulded and chamfered surrounds. A timber panelled door with a pointed-arched fanlight is set in a projecting pitch-roofed porch, which features foliated brackets and a trefoil in the gable, flanked by two-light cusped windows with foliated shafts. Above, there are three tall windows; the central window has a carved impost and plate tracery, with decorative panelling that conceals the pulpit below mid-level. A circular window is set in the gable, and a tall window with plate tracery and a carved impost is located in the outer right bay, which is bisected by a diagonal panel that conceals the stair.

The east elevation facing Fisher's Close is more simply detailed, featuring stepped pointed-arched windows on the upper floor. The glazing on the south and east elevations includes frosted horizontal-pane glass with remnants of border-glazing, while the lower section has small-pane sash and case windows. The roof is covered with graded grey slates.
