Description
Newmills Farmhouse is an early to earlier 19th century, two-storey, three-bay rectangular-plan farmhouse featuring a tall first floor. The exterior is constructed from squared and coursed sandstone with ashlar margins and dressings, raised cills, quoins, and a base course, while the rear is finished in limewashed rubble.
The south elevation, which is the main front, has three symmetrical bays and a two-bay single-storey block on the outer right. At the centre is a six-panelled door with an umbrella fanlight and an ashlar architrave. The flanking windows are symmetrically arranged, with additional windows on the first floor. The slightly-recessed single-storey block on the outer right has a modern French door to the left and a window to the outer right.
The north elevation, or rear, features a three-bay main block with a projecting single-storey, three-bay flat-roofed block attached to the left and centre. The main block has windows symmetrically arranged, while the addition includes a bipartite window on the outer left, a door with a bipartite window to the outer left, and a narrow window to the outer right on the right return.
The farmhouse has 12-pane sash and case windows, a grey slate roof with ashlar coping at the skews and coped, rendered apex stacks. The flat-roofed addition also features ashlar coping.
The farmhouse is bounded on the south side, facing Lanark Road West, by a rubble wall with boulder semicircular coping, which curves to form an entrance at the centre.
