490 Lanark Road West, 488, Balerno

This late 19th century house at 490 Lanark Road West, 488, Balerno, is a two-storey, three-bay structure with a rectangular plan. It is built from stugged, squared, and snecked sandstone, featuring polished sandstone dressings and details. The windows have stop-chamfered reveals, and the building includes an eaves cornice, hoodmoulds, and rusticated quoins.

The southeast elevation has three nearly symmetrical bays. The central entrance features a doorpiece with roll-moulded surrounds, narrow sidelights with four panes, a stepped hoodmould with label stops, and a panelled door topped with a two-pane fanlight. To the outer right is a canted bay, while the outer left has a tripartite square bay, both topped with a blocking course. The first floor windows are symmetrically arranged, with a central window and bipartites on either side. There is a later bay addition recessed to the right, which includes a rendered garage at ground level.

The windows are six-pane over plate glass sash and case style. The roof is covered with grey slate and features ashlar coping on the skews and skewblocks, along with corniced apex stacks.

The interior was not seen in 1993. The boundary wall is a low rubble wall with harl pointing and slab coping.
