Description
6, 8, 10 Bangholm Bower Avenue is a plain classical house dating from around 1800. It is two stories high with three bays and features a piend roof. The house has been divided and has later single-storey wings, with the eastern wing having a later mansard roof and other alterations. The front is finished in droved ashlar, while the sides and rear are made of coursed rubble. The building has polished ashlar long and short quoins, projecting cills, and a base course.
The southern elevation, which is the principal facade, is regularly fenestrated. The entrance is located in the central bay and features a timber panelled door with a decorative fanlight and sidelights, all set within a painted stone doorpiece that has Doric pilasters and a corniced entablature. There is also a cast-iron lamp bracket. The attic has two later dormers, and there is a three-light window in the western wing.
The northern elevation, facing Bangholm Bower Avenue, is also regularly fenestrated. It has an entrance with a timber-panelled door in the central bay, which is offset to the left. A tall round-headed window with stained glass is present above the stair.
Inside, the house retains good early plasterwork, staircase details, and chimneypieces, despite suffering a fire in the 1980s. The windows are timber sash and case with 12-pane glazing. The roof is covered with graded grey slates, and there are tall ashlar stacks with octagonal cans.
