35-37 Candlemaker Row, Edinburgh

35-37 Candlemaker Row is a four-storey tenement building designed by James Craig in 1774, located on a splayed corner site. It features three bays facing Candlemaker Row and five bays facing Merchant Street, with nepus gables topped by apex stacks on each side. The building is constructed of random rubble with polished ashlar dressings, and has a dividing band between the ground and first floors as well as beneath the gables. The corners are accentuated with long and short rusticated quoins.

On the south elevation facing Merchant Street, the building has a regular arrangement of windows. In the center, there is a timber panelled door set in a moulded surround. Above the second and third bays from the left, there is a nepus gable with two windows. To the right, there is a later piend-roofed dormer.

The southwest elevation facing Candlemaker Row features a timber panelled door with a letterbox fanlight to the left and a small round-arched window in the gablehead. There is also a later window in the gable roof.

The windows are fitted with 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case frames, and the roof is covered with grey slates. The apex stacks are corniced and have circular cans.
