Description
3 Merchant Street in Edinburgh is a four-storey tenement building with an attic and basement, designed by Robert Burn in 1810. The exterior features droved ashlar stone with polished dressings and has a regular arrangement of windows, each with raised margins. To the left of the entrance, there is a window set in a keystoned round-arched recess. The entrance is accessed by stone steps and platts, which are adorned with cast-iron railings that cover the basement area.
The main door is a deep-set timber panelled design, topped with a three-pane glazed fanlight and framed by a Doric pilastered doorpiece with a fluted frieze. The building also includes later piend-roofed dormers. The windows are timber sash and case, featuring 12-pane glazing, and the roof is covered with grey slates. A corniced end stack with circular cans is present as well.
