Description

10 and 11 George IV Bridge in Edinburgh is a three-storey tenement block with an attic and basements, built in 1868 by R Thornton Sheills. The building features a 10-bay design with shops on the ground floor facing George IV Bridge. The exterior is made of polished ashlar, which is painted at the ground level, and stugged ashlar with polished dressings for the first three floors of the basements that face Cowgate. Above these, there is more ashlar, while the rear is constructed of coursed rubble.

The elevation facing George IV Bridge has a base course and cornice for the shops, a cill course at the second floor, and eaves with blocking courses. The windows at the first and second floors are corniced and have lugged architraves, linked by paired incised lines. There are Doric pilasters at the ground floor shops on the right, with a modern shop front on the left. The flats have timber panelled doors with plate glass fanlights. The mansard roof features pedimented dormers, and there is a cast-iron parapet decorated with an anthemion motif along with a stone balustrade.

On the Cowgate elevation, there are three bays with a seven-storey and attic section to the left, and a five-storey, two-bay pedimented block to the right. This right section has paired windows on the ground, first, second, and third floors, and a single window flanked by paired pilasters at the fourth floor. The building has four-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, grey slate roofing, and corniced ashlar end and ridge stacks with circular cans.
