Description

14 South St Andrew Street in Edinburgh is a four-storey building with a ground floor mezzanine and a double attic, designed by George Washington Browne between 1914 and 1915. The building features a three-bay office with a restaurant located on the ground and basement levels, constructed from polished cream sandstone ashlar. The ground floor exhibits channelled rustication, with a corniced architraved door set within an arch. The upper floors are framed by channelled pilasters, and the first and second floors are adorned with giant recessed Ionic columns, topped with an entablature and a dentilled cornice. The first-floor windows are complemented by cast-iron balconies and decorative wreaths above them. The third floor has a continuous row of nine narrow windows. The building is capped with a modillioned cornice and a balustraded parapet, and behind it lies a full-width timber corniced attic featuring four-light windows in each bay, along with a piended roof that includes three segmental-pedimented dormers.

The exterior also includes metal casement windows, grey slates, and ashlar stacks. Inside, the restaurant has a compartmented ceiling and boxed-in columns, while the upper floors are fitted with suspended ceilings.
