Description
3 St Andrew Square in Edinburgh is a six-storey, three-bay office building designed by Burnet, Son and Dick between 1923 and 1925, with alterations made at the ground floor in 1968-1969. Originally an extension of Forsyth's, its design is adapted from the Princes Street style to fit a narrow site. The exterior features polished cream sandstone ashlar and plate glass windows at the ground floor, with marble Ionic columns on the first floor framed by a flat proscenium arch. There is a bronze balcony on the first floor with lamps. The second floor showcases channelled rustication with a consoled band above, and a central broken pedimented aedicule with a festoon below. The third and fourth floors are marked by giant Ionic columns. At the fifth floor, a projecting cornice leads to a balustraded parapet with term figures and urn finials at the corners.
The rear elevation is constructed of white glazed brick and includes a flying link to 30 Princes Street, which is listed separately. The sandstone ashlar on the rear is dated 1925 and features a broken pedimented aedicule. The interior has been modernized but retains the original frame.
