Description
12 Hill Square in Edinburgh is an early 19th-century, four-storey and basement Classical corner tenement. It features a six by five bay layout and is located on the eastern side of Hill Square, with its rear facing Richmond Place. The building is constructed from squared and coursed, droved sandstone, with chamfered rusticated ashlar at the ground level and rubble at the rear. The entrance platform oversails the basement, and there are band courses above the basement and ground levels, as well as a cill course at the fourth storey and a cornice. The windows have raised cills, and the ground level on the southern side (Hill Place) has round-arched openings. The principal elevation on the western side includes a six-panel timber entrance door topped with a multi-pane square fanlight.
The building predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with some blind windows on the southern side. The roof is covered with grey slates and has a coped gable and ridge stacks. Additionally, there is low coping on the western side, which is topped with decorative iron railings.
