Description
15 Drummond Street in Edinburgh is a large residential and commercial tenement block built around 1790. It has five storeys, a basement, and an attic, featuring a principal elevation with 30 bays. The outer bays have broad, shouldered wall-head gables, while the centre has a pair of wall-head gablets with piended dormers in between. The building is constructed of ashlar stone with raised cills, and there is a band course between the ground and first floors, along with a cill course at the second floor. The Nicolson Street elevation has six bays, and the Roxburgh Place elevation has five bays.
The ground floor includes timber pilastered shop fronts and commercial premises at 2-15 Drummond Street and 2-6 Nicolson Street, featuring a curving decorated timber pilaster at the northwest corner and a 20th-century shallow canted infill window on the first floor. The commercial premises at No 14 Drummond Street have a tall two-leaf timber panelled door, fluted pilasters, panelling, and a dentiled cornice, along with a segmental-arched pend to the immediate left. The ground floor windows at Nos 16-22 Drummond Street are set in recessed round-arched panels, with over-sailing steps leading to the main entrances that have simple classical door surrounds and large fanlights, complemented by cast-iron railings.
The building features 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, a slate roof, end stacks, coped skews and skewputs, clay cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods. Inside, the public house at No 14 Drummond Street showcases elaborate cornicing and some timber panelling.
