Description

The stables at The Drum in Gilmerton, Edinburgh, date back to 1806 and are designed in a classical U-plan layout situated to the south of the main house. This long, low structure features projecting wings and is constructed from squared and coursed rubble, accented with polished ashlar dressings. Notable elements include a base course, eaves course, and moulded surrounds to the bull's-eye windows.

On the southwest front elevation, there is a large central doorway designed as a triumphal arch that breaks the eaves. This doorway has a vermiculated base course and rustication above, along with moulded imposts, a console keystone, a cornice, and a blocking course. Above, a large octagonal cupola rests on a swept ashlar base, featuring timber louvres and a lead dome topped with a ball and finial. Flanking the doorway are two bull's-eye windows, with a window between them on each side. The advanced piended wings include windows and pilastered cart openings, as well as a blind Venetian window on the return.

At the rear, there is a lower piended addition projecting at the center, with a lean-to adjoining this and the main block to the left. The timber windows feature 4-pane glazing for the bull's-eyes, 12-pane sashes, and iron bars for the larger windows. The roof is covered with graded grey slates and includes two timber louvred ridge ventilators flanking the dome with finials.

Inside, the stables retain their original stalls, which are supported by cast-iron columns topped with ball finials, and decorative screens over boarded timber stall divides.
