Description

Farmstead Cottage at Drum Farm in Gilmerton, Edinburgh, is an early 19th century group of farm buildings located to the southeast of the stables.

The southwest range includes a cottage that is single storey and constructed of random rubble with ashlar dressings. The northeast elevation features a timber boarded door topped with a 3-pane letterbox fanlight, flanked by bipartite windows on the right and a single window on the left. The southwest elevation has a similar door and flanking windows. The cottage has timber sash and case windows with a small-pane glazing pattern, red pantiles on the roof, ashlar coped skews, and ashlar coped stacks with a simple cornice. There is a brick lean-to addition on the northeast gable, which adjoins a dovecot. The dovecot is a two-stage lectern structure made of rubble with ashlar dressings, featuring an entrance on the southwest side and a lean-to greenhouse at the ground floor. Above the greenhouse, there is a door flanked by two small openings. The catslide roof has a row of flight holes and is covered with grey slates and ashlar coped skews. To the left of the dovecot is a lower, lean-to one-bay range that is linked to and now part of the adjoining cottages to the northwest.

To the right, there is a single storey, three-bay harled range, which was probably originally one cottage. It has a glazed door on the right and a two-bay rubble range adjoining to the left with square windows. The timber sash and case windows have a 12-pane glazing pattern, and the roof is covered with grey slates and has ashlar coped skews, along with a brick ridge stack.

At right angles to the northwest, there is an ashlar coped rubble screen wall that encloses the stable court, which has some openings and is now overgrown. This wall adjoins the gamekeeper's cottage to the northeast, which is also single storey with three widely spaced bays and an entrance from the southeast. The front is harled while the sides and rear are made of rubble. It features a central door, flanking windows, and two small piended dormers in the attic. There is one window at the ground floor at the rear, and the cottage has timber sash and case windows with a 12-pane glazing pattern. The roof is covered with grey slates, has ashlar coped skews, and features one coped ashlar end stack, while the other stack has been renewed and rendered, with a brick wall-head stack at the rear.

Additionally, there is a range of rubble screen walls to the southeast that enclose animal pens. These walls have two central doorways flanked by two cruciform arrow slit openings on the right and one simple arrow slit on the left.
