Description
27-29 Buccleuch Street is a tenement building dating from around 1760. It stands three storeys high with an attic and features three bays, including a shop at the ground floor. The building has a Venetian window in the attic gable and a stairtower at the rear, and it now forms the end of a terrace. The exterior is constructed of cream and pink sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings, while the side gable wall is rendered. The building has projecting cills.
On the west elevation, there is a later tenement door with a glazed sidelight and fanlight in the outer left bay. The central and outer right bays feature a 1960s plate glass shopfront. Each bay has a single window on the first and second floors above. Above the eaves, there is a central gabled and keystoned Venetian window, although the dressings have plastic repairs. A gablehead stack is present.
The east elevation, which is the rear, has two bays. An advanced bowed stairtower is located in the outer right bay, with single windows between each floor. The outer left bay and the return to the stairtower also have single windows on each floor, with a third-floor window breaking the eaves. A carved heraldic panel is set to the lower left of the first-floor window, featuring the initials JG and CP, dated 1687.
The north side elevation is rendered and has no openings. It features four-pane sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, and a coped gablehead stack.
There is a rubble boundary wall adjoining to the east.
