Description

2-3 Buccleuch Place in Edinburgh is a four-storey building with a dormered attic and basement, dating from around 1790 and designed by James Brown. This terrace of tenements features a slightly recessed single bay with a common stair at Nos. 2 and 5. The structure is made of ashlar sandstone, with a channelled ashlar ground floor and bases, and has long and short quoined corners. The ground floor includes shops at the corner of Buccleuch Place and Buccleuch Street, featuring timber fascias. The rear elevation is constructed from rubble sandstone.

The building showcases a variety of round-arched and flat-arched entrances, with entrance plats that oversail the basement. Nos. 3 and 5 feature a Roman Doric columned and corniced doorpiece, while No. 6 has a pedimented doorpiece with an open base. A central gablehead stack is present at No. 1. The rear elevations of Nos. 3, 4, and 6 each have a full-height, two-window, off-centre bowed bay.

The windows are primarily 12-pane glazing set in sash and case timber frames. The roofs are covered with grey slates and feature wide, corniced ridge and gable stacks with cylindrical cans. The property is enclosed by low coped walls topped with cast iron railings.
