Description

West Gate Lodge at Princess Margaret Rose Hospital, located at 41-43 Frogston Road West in Edinburgh, was designed by Sir Reginald Fairlie around 1935. This semi-detached lodge is two storeys high with a total of eight bays, symmetrically arranged around the center. The exterior is harled, featuring a painted base course, cills, and porch coping.

On the south elevation, there are four windows on the single-storey central section, which has a roof that slopes down from the two-storey section at the rear. This central section is flanked by square, flat-roofed porches that are set into re-entrant angles, formed by the advanced two-storey outer bays. Each of these outer bays has a window on both floors, and the porches feature panelled doors and small windows on their inner returns.

The north elevation also consists of eight bays. It has a flat-roofed double porch at the center that spans the paired central bays. Each side of the porch has paired first-floor windows above, with single windows flanking at ground level. The penultimate and outer bays each have windows on both floors.

The east and west elevations are blank. The lodge features timber sash and case windows with a small-pane glazing pattern, and it has a grey slate roof with swept eaves. The wallhead is harled, and there are mutual ridge stacks.

The interior was not inspected in 1998.

The lodge is accompanied by gatepiers, gates, and boundary walls. The gatepiers are made of rubble sandstone and have domed caps, flanking the principal drive. There are square rubble piers flanking the pedestrian gates on the sides. A low, coped, squared, and snecked rubble boundary wall runs along Frogston Road West. The gates are wrought iron, featuring scrolled finials for both pedestrian and vehicular access.
