Education Block, Redford Cavalry Barracks, Colinton Road, Edinburgh

The Education Block at Redford Cavalry Barracks on Colinton Road in Edinburgh is a single-storey, four-bay former school building designed by Harry B Measures and constructed between 1909 and 1915. This rectangular-plan building features gables at its end bays and dormer windows that project through the eaves on the northeast and southwest elevations. The base course is made of dark, coursed rock-faced rubble, with concrete render above and pale ashlar dressings. A band course runs along the building, and the windows have projecting cills. Each gabled bay is fitted with tall, transomed bipartite windows in the center, flanked by single windows.

The listing excludes the flat-roofed and brick sections to the southwest, as stated in Section 1 (4A) of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) (Scotland) Act 1997. Steps lead to a part-glazed entrance door on an outshoot to the southwest elevation.

The windows are mainly timber sash and case, featuring a 6-pane glazing pattern in both the upper and lower sashes. The roof is covered with grey graded slates and has raised skews. The interior, observed in 2016, includes a long, painted brick corridor with most rooms located off to the northeast.
