Sergeants' Mess, Redford Cavalry Barracks, Colinton Road, Edinburgh

The Sergeants' Mess at Redford Cavalry Barracks on Colinton Road, Edinburgh, is a single-storey building with an asymmetrical plan. It features a 7-bay section to the northwest, built between 1909 and 1915, designed by Harry B Measures, and a later 5-bay section to the southeast, constructed around 1940, along with a 3-bay link building.

The structure is made of dark, coursed rock-faced rubble with pale ashlar dressings. It includes a cill course, a band course, and an eaves course, while the linking section has a blocking course. The windows are designed with projecting cills.

The main facade faces northeast. The 5-bay section from around 1940 is located on the left and features slightly advanced end bays. To the right, there is a 2-leaf timber entrance door set in a simple architrave. The earlier 7-bay section has a central tripartite bay topped with a scrolled and finialled pediment, flanked by paired windows.

The windows in the earlier section are mainly timber casement windows with 6-pane glazing in the upper lights and 4-pane glazing in the lower lights. The later section primarily features timber sash and case windows with 12-pane glazing. Both sections have piended roofs covered with grey slates and include cornice stacks with red clay cans.

The interior, observed in 2016, contains some rooms with simple cornicing and several part-glazed timber doors.
