Description
The Former Sergeant's Mess at the Redford Infantry Barracks on Colinton Road in Edinburgh is a single-storey building with an asymmetrical plan, featuring six bays. Designed by Harry B Measures, it was constructed between 1909 and 1915. The structure is made of dark, coursed rock-faced rubble with pale ashlar dressings, and includes a cill course, a band course, and an eaves course. The flat-roofed section has a blocking course, and the windows feature projecting cills.
The main façade faces southwest and includes a recessed piended section on the right, alongside an advanced central tripartite bay topped with a scrolled and finialled pediment. There are paired windows flanking this bay. On the northwest elevation, there is an advanced porch that features a two-leaf timber door with a small-pane glazed fanlight above.
Most windows are timber casements, with 6-pane glazing in the upper lights and 4-pane glazing in the lower lights. The piended roof is covered with grey graded slates.
The interior, as observed in 2016, consists of a central corridor with offices on either side, and some doors have part glazed fanlights above them.
